Old news really, it isn't just band member promoting their own stuff, lots of people post up material they did not create. Youtube is a similar story, lots of illegal content there too, the only reason no-one has bothered suing youtube until now is youtube didn't have any money, then google bought them, kerching! royalty payday!

Personally, if MySpace disapearred from the face of the interweb, I'd quietly celebrate with a cup of tea and a fresh pack of jaffa cakes. Waste of bandwidth, whats wrong with a good old nicely coded website, eh? Back in my day, I remember when this were empty data centres....

i think myspace is best as a means for bands to get to know each other, and do some advertising. In terms of finding music, i personally have never really found anyone that great solely from myspace, and a proper band page is usually so much better looking, that it would seem to be a better idea.

as for social networking i dont think youre ever going to find true love, but it is handy for putting up photos when youre travelling etc (bebo that is, myspace seems pretty crap for that). so not all bad!

Exactly, generally when I'm looking at a bands myspace page, it's because they were linked from somewhere else. e.g. I found a band called Dragonette (who are rather good) via popjustice, which linked to their myspace page http://www.myspace.com/dragonetteband but their own site is so much better http://www.dragonette.ca/

Cos if you get rid of the social networky bit, which a hell of a lot of people buy into, then alot less people are going to be getting access to the band. ALso i suppsoe its a cheap way for a band to get a site up, still though there has to be a better way.

I have a myspace page, but it hasnt done much for me, mind you i've put zero effort into it, so maybe thats a bad point. Id like to know what people who put work into their page, and would gig a bit think of it.

ok im dragging up an old argument here and probably going to get a bollicking for it but i think myspace is great - not on its own obviously but a tool for networking (and not fecking social "im here for friends and dating" rubbish). one reason it is so useful is that, in ireland esp, it is very tough to get into the music scene unless you are a musician yourself. for people who want to get into the promotion or management area for example it can really help get a foothold - even for getting to know whos who. when used properly it is actually very effective at making first contact with potentialy great contacts.

and btw i dont think the same of bebo
