klootfan, they have been around for quite a while, relatively big in the states... is there such a genre as avant-pop?... anyway, they have a japanese bjork for a vocalist although she doesn't sing that many lyrics, they play unusual non-structured shtuff with heavy guitars but also with a childish toy-like feel to it... they're songs are often under two minutes long but it's the beauty of the highly individual melodies that stand out... their last album, the runners four (which i do not have) got rave reviews in most cases but is possibly overlong and less experimental... previous albums reveille and apple o are maybe seen as their creatve highpoint... ...slightly dodgy description that but it will have to do

deerhoof are great! one of the most exciting bands i've heard in last couple of years it's kind of proggy pop, some fantastic riffs and drumming, Satomi Matsuzaki delivers terrificly unconventional vocals and lyrics in the way that only a person whose first language is not English can do (Karin from 'The Knife' also comes to mind here) my post on them in the 'music recommendations' section will point you in the right direction
