what a show, opened with Agnus Dei with Rufus at the piano, diamante brooch sparkling and scarf thrown over his shoulder. His hair looked like it had a mind of its own and flopped around in time to the music. He played for well over 2 hours and did two or three encores. He had his band with him and mixed up the set with full band numbers and solo songs on the piano. Amazing. He sang Little Sister for Martha, Beauty Mark for Kate, Dinner at Eight for Loudon. Other songs that got an airing included The Art Teacher, Peach Trees, Gay Messiah dedicated to Pope John Paul and Pope Benedict, Memphis Skyline for Jeff Buckley, Hallelujah, The One You Love, 14th Street, Beautiful Child, Pretty Things, Vibrate, Cigarettes and Chocolate, California and many more. He did Old Whore's Diet in full costume of skimpy black outfit, Miss Dublin sash, tiara, fairy wings and wand and the rest of the band followed suit and stripped down to green and gold underwear and it became a gay cabaret for the last 10-15 minutes. He finished up in a black cloak and witch's hat and a standing ovation from the crowd upstairs. Really brilliant gig, definitely check out Martha Wainwright in July, reckon she'll be equally as good.

I have to say that it was in all senses of the word fabulous. People should not be able to sing live like that, it's just not fair.
I'm still a bit torn on the guy, his weaker stuff is a wee bit dodgy but when he gets it right he's brilliant.
Opening act was abysmal.

yeah have to agree with opening act, that's why I didn't even mention her, Joan Watson? definitely could have found somebody better to open. I'm a bigger fan of Poses and Want One and he did miss the mark on a few songs but overall great gig.

Joan was in Rufus' band playing guitat/violin/singing as well, I'd imagine thats why she got the spot.

i dont think there's anything ignorant about talking over a support act that suck.
If they suck, then they don't demand attention.

I'm afraid I'm with Una on this one. I always give support acts a fair crack of the whip, and have seen some amazing people as support but I had to chat to my friends during Joan's set to allieviate the boredom. She was terrible, but a very good violinist in a band setting. Rufus tho was amazing- such a fantastic voice and dripping with charisma.. he really was born to be a performer.
Sir Elton is gonna have to pull out all the stops if he doesn't want to end up being overshadowed by his support act!!!

David La Chapelle has designed the stage for Elton John's tour. It looks amazing. That said, I would prefer to chew a roll of tinfoil than pay to see him (unless he played Tiny Dancer for the whole gig. Then I'd go)

No, I listened to her the whole way through and very occasionally whispered to the person I was with "she sucks", "she still sucks" and "even playing the piano she's a little better but she still sucks". However out of respect to the (few) people there that were enjoying her I stayed pretty quiet, actually out of respect for her I did the same too even if I didn't enjoy her. There is a bar for people to go to in Vicar Street if they want to have a chat.
