Anyone who attended Final Fantasy’s debut Dublin show in Whelan’s in May will testify to the genius of Owen Pallet. Performing onstage with a drummer and an old school arts & crafts projectionist, Pallet plucks and bows violin expertly, looping each part seamlessly into the arrangement via surreptitious foot pedals. His second album of delicious chamber-pop He Poos Clouds saw off competition from fellow Canadian stars such as Wolf Parade and Broken Social Scene to scoop the inaugural Polaris Music Prize (Canadian equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize). Previously Pallet has been lauded for his string arrangements for bands such as Les Mouches (from the Blocks Recording Company), The Hidden Cameras and Arcade Fire (on Funeral and their forthcoming second album), but now it is his own awkward, poetic, brilliant music as Final Fantasy that is receiving all the attention it deserves.
