Ballroom #57 - A Hallow'een Party, fancy dress even! Friday 27th of Oct The Lower Deck, Portobello Doors 9pm, €8, free CD-r to the first 100 Medea Medea is a Dublin based three-piece comprising of Edel Coffey (guitar and vocals), Mary Carton (bass and vocals) and Lynn Millar (drums). Since they formed in 2003 they have developed a sparse, melodic sound which has been likened to bands such as Joy Division, The Breeders and Sleater-Kinney. On the night they will be revealing a super dooper new keyboard player Http://www.myspace.com/medeamusic Queen Kong Queen Kong - everyone's favourite Corkonians return to the Ballroom with an expanded line up and as much goth, industrial pop as ever! "And then Queen Kong. What ever it is the Dandys searched for in that dodgy house party aftermath these guys have growing out of their heads like cabbage. But its not just vogueing they have songs too and Amy can sing and screaaaam. In fact she has an extraordinary voice. Guitarist Ruby favours fishnet uppers and leopard skin leggings, Bassist David rips off his top oh oh slightly misshapen never mind who are we to talk? Recent gigs have seen the roof blown off of: 1)Ballroom of Romance 2)Electric Fix 3)LazyBird (twice)|as well as scintillating support slots with acts as diverse as Saul Williams, Lesbians On Ecstacy and Selfish C*nt. They have a sparkling, noisy power pop sound that could scoop up those rinky dink hoes and leave them in the mickey mouse place for ever. Watch out Queen Kong is coming!! They call them selves pop deconstructionists in the sense that their gigs can range from all-Synth Tech Noir affairs to full on Industrial Assaults Many years ago I saw a music journalist waste the image of a scud missile with an angel delight warhead on some useless shower of fops. OK lets reclaim this metaphor of mass seduction - heres a crowd that will fit it like a glove!" http://www.myspace.com/qk Story of Hair Story of Hair are a great rock band with 3 girls and 2 guys. Their music reminds us of Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Stooges, but they describe themselves thusly "Never before have 5 individual strands of hair been combed together and genetically modified to form a band. But that my dear fans is what happened. With a spray of noise, a comb over of feedback and sat for half an hour under hot hot hair Sinead a painter unparalleled by the greats before her. A cold blooded hunter of gaffs. A howler. A screamer. A singer. Paul the archivist's archivist. A bassist with the speed learning skills of a Stephen Hawkins spider baby. Ger a man of a million odd tales. A drummer. A user of the words rib of hair. For they are words. Amanda a fashion icon. An experimental guitarist of the people from the gods. A strange individual type. Caroline a quitter of jobs. A guitartist of the 23rd century via 450 BC. A shouter. A drinker but never a singer." http://www.myspace.com/storyofhair Lauren Guillery & the Claws Born in France in the late seventies now resident in Dublin, Lauren Guillery has a knack for captivating her audiences with her provocative and dynamic performances. This hugely talented singer-songwriter has a great voice and delivers Rock n’ Roll with lots of energy. Accompanied with her band ‘THE CLAWS’, Lauren has a diversity that transcends the typical PJ Harvey / Kate Bush comparisons as she has a more varied sound and a more aggressive approach to her guitar playing. Her lyrical content and vocal style set her apart; there is intensity and rawness in every song; she is passionate, confident and always striving for each performance to build up upon the last. Just back in Dublin after a 3 week madness touring around the island of Ireland as a solo opening act for Leanne Harte, Lauren suffered the frustration of not being able to play with her ‘boys’ and she has now decided that ‘THE CLAWS’ would accompany her every time she plays. With Patrice Revel and Doug Farrell as a rhythm section, Lauren’s crunchy and distorted guitars blend immensely well with her boys’ funky bass and drum lines. The energetic 3-piece’s performances have been recently compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Yeah that’s right, they will make you go: ‘WOW!’ Lauren Guillery and the Claws, debut EP ‘Listen!’ available now. www.laurenguillery.com www.myspace.com/laurenguillery
