A night of guitar pop Featuring… Factro Envelope The Ruby Taillights Friday 21st of April The Lower Deck, Portobello, €8 in, free CD-r to the first 100 Doors 9pm Factro Inspired by pop, post-punk and empty evenings, Factro formed on a rainy Dublin afternoon in November 2003. It was a sad story initially. The young heroes had a handful of songs and nowhere to play, so flatmates Patrick Wall, BillyY and former schoolmate James Bailey just sat around for a while talking about playing in a band. But soon a stinking rented room in the ‘Underground’ provided the location and equipment for Factro to finally become a full-fledged reality. Recording their brief, infectious indie-pop songs with a dented microphone in the corner of the malodorous basement room, Factro slowly disseminated the hissy recording among their friends. Amazingly, the ears of friends - nurtured by years of lo-fi - picked out tunes from the white noise and encouraged them to practise more. Five songs quickly grew to over 30 in a couple of short months. With just a few practices under their belts, Factro made their live debut at a Stoneybatter house-party in May 2004, before playing a couple of supports around town, including the Project in August. A slot at The Ballroom of Romance in December 2004 followed, as the band built up a well-dressed following. In November 2004, to mark one year together, Factro took to the studio for the weekend to record a four-track demo/EP with producer Steve Shannon. Unable to describe their own sound due to a lack of vocabulary, Steve labelled them as ‘indie with pop sensibilities’ – a description Factro have since adopted. Sean joined to boost the numbers in February 2005. Recent gigs have included headlining Crawdaddy, The Village and - for a strange reason - a lot of Sugar Club shows. www.factro.com Envelope envelope are a three piece band from Dublin, Ireland. The band was formed in 2004 following 3 years of writing and recording. Their taste for subtle, sweet melodic music is twinned with a ferocious appetite for textured noise. The band have been compared to the follwing artists: Elbow, Low, Sigur Ros, explosions in the sky, mogwai. envelope are: Phil Boughton (voice/guitar) , Simon Rand (drums/voice), Daryl Chaney (Bass) www.postroom.com http://www.myspace.com/envelopemusic The Ruby Taillights The Ruby Taillights are a great guitar band from Dublin featuring ex members of Sunbear. The Ruby Taillights have been forced to postpone. We've found great replacements in.. The Star Department The Star Department are a new 4- piece band from Dublin who formed in November '05. The band plan to release their debut EP in mid June. It'll be mixed and mastered by legendary American producer Kramer (Low, Dinosaur Jr, Galaxie 500, Joy Zipper) who was impressed enough with the bands demo to want to produce them in the future. Sonically, there's intertwining, delay- ridden guitars underpinned by interloper basslines. A backbeat of intuitive, driving drums topped off with a rich vocal melody....songs consisting of a tempered crescendo, a peak, an overflow then BANG! comes the end "we were very impressed by their epic soundscapes; their recorded output is reminiscent of a glacial Scando-rock/ experimental Radiohead-esque hybrid... (a band with) such a bright future ahead of them..." http://www.myspace.com/departmentmusic
