Crayonsmith is the music of Ciaran Smith from Dublin, Ireland. When he was eight years old, Ciaran robbed his sister's Bontempi keyboard, and, together with a pre-historic radio and a cassette of The Beach Boys' "Summer Dreams", he began learning to play his favourite songs on keyboard and, later, guitar. Having played in various musical projects and bands from the age of twelve, Ciaran had always been writing and recording pop/rock songs by himself in his bedroom as a side-project, using guitar, keys, drum-machine and a four-track. In early 2004, Ciaran began playing these songs live under the name Crayonsmith.
Having seen Crayonsmith play in Maynooth College in February 2004 with The Coldspoon Conspiracy and Hermie in Tweed, John Cowhie (AKA Goodtime John) kindly agreed to record one of the songs. After this recording session, Ciaran decided to buy a new recording programme and set about recording a demo EP, as well as continuing to play live, including a slot at Songs From The Parlour, and also slots with Giveamanakick, Neosupervital, and English electronic act, Tex la Homa.
And so, in August 2004, Crayonsmith released the "You Get Down Here" EP on his own stayloosesongs which was very well received, landing him gigs with Jeff Martin, Torgas Valley Reds, Jape, Fred and a spot at the prestigious Ballroom of Romance. In December 2004, Crayonsmith released a split Christmas single with Windings that was equally well received.
In 2005, Ciaran began recording his debut album in his bedroom and then took these recordings to Steve Fanagan (North Station, Moose Eats Leaf, Old Man Polka) for touch up mixing and production. Mastered by Fergal Davis in August, promotional copies of the album will be sent to various independent record labels in Ireland and the UK in October in the hope of raising an interest. On the live circuit, so far, Crayonsmith supported Windings for his album tour of Ireland, played the highly reputable Lazybird in Dublin and secured supports with Electric Six, Joy Zipper, The Chalets and The Dudley Corporation.
