Next Skinny Wolves Club: Thread Pulls The New Heat/Obscured By Light (Sweden) w/ Guest DJ Jaakko (Finland) & Adrian (Spindizzy Records) Thursday 26th January '06 The Hub, Dublin ///////////////////////////////////////// Thread Pulls Website: http://www.threadpulls.com Thread Pulls are a band from Dublin, Ireland. They are Gavin Duffy, Ed Kelly and Peter Maybury. Their debut EP "Summer Songs" has been described as: "breathtaking - equal parts austere minimalism and Shellac-esque brutality. The airless loops, dissonance and fleeting melodies...gorgeous"... The Wire magazine described "Summer Songs" as "built from feedback, dissonant chops and reedy vocals... traversing a tar pit, laborious foot lift by laborious foot lift, guitar dripping black oily tendrils and bitumen clots, like a heathen god risen from a forbidden land"..."a pulse of snarling guitars and noises, melodic yet lashed with feedback and tension..." In 2005 Thread Pulls performed at the Vincent Gallo curated All Tomorrow's Parties festival in the UK and completed recording their debut album (to be released in 2006). This is Thread Pulls first live performance since All Tomorrow's Parties. ////////////////////////// Reviews Summer Songs "The slow angular spiked guitar trudge of Dublin young pups and three piece Thread Pulls is built from feedback, dissonant chops and reedy vocals that put one in mind of Thurston Moore traversing a tar pit, laborious foot lift by laborious foot lift, guitar dripping black oily tendrils and bitumen clots, like a heathen god risen from a forbidden land: a Subsonic Youth in every sense. This debut mini album collects five tracks and is an admirable declaration of intent. Opener "Summer" builds over a riff churning like an idling diesel engine, high guitar chimes ushering in the buzzing tectonic bass and drum part led by pinpoint cymbals, before the vocal arrives. This modus operandi works to particularly fine effect on the somnambulant sludge riffed "Nearly There" and the disenchanted stop-start squalls of final instrumental track "Building"" - Nick Southgate, The WIRE Magazine //////////////////////////////////////////////// The New Heat / Obscured By Light (Sweden) Website: http://www.canellwatkins.org/ The New Heat/Obscured by Light is two projects by Nina Canell and Robin Watkins. The New Heat takes the shape of five slow songs which employ sleepy singing birds and magnetic song-writing. The eerie vocals and swirly guitars are integrated with droned organs, weightless drumming and various other sonic snippets. Obscured by Light derived from an object-based sound installation commissioned for the exhibition Obscured by Clouds (Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Dublin 2004). Organs, sleep-machines and various prepared instruments/objects are weaved into one continuous 20-minute spectra-animated pop drone. This vinyl LP comes in special packaging and is limited to 250 numbered copies. ////////////////////////////// "On the same label a split LP by The New Heat and Obscured By Light. The New Heat is Nina Canell and Robin Williams. Obscured By Light is Nina Canell and Robin Williams. Yes, that's twice the same people, but the results are so different that choosing two different names is indeed a very wise idea. As The New Heat they play songs, on drums, guitars, organs and vocals (and more things with keys, really). Dreamy and spacy stuff going on here, a bit Windy and Carl like, but with enough ideas of their own, as-well as enough (as in more) variation in choosing different sounds. Intimate, new-folky electronica in which drones play a considerable role. As Obscured By Light however they do something completely different. It's an 'object-based sound installation', and the music, although one piece, was recorded in sections between September 2004 and January 2005. Pretty much similar instruments, but also milk caps, bucket, radio and a portable chair were used. The resultant twenty minutes is a collage of drone like sounds, synthesizer bleeps, radio static and more some such" Staalplaat Distribution /////////////////////////// Next Skinny Wolves Promotions: Numbers (California, USA | Tigerbeat6, Troubleman Unlimited, Kill Rock Stars, Polyvinyl Records ) w/ Cap Pas Cap & Guests Thursday 2nd March '06 The Hub, Dublin /////////////////////////// MORE INFORMATION, MP3, PHOTOS, VIDEO, POSTERS, ETC: http://www.skinnywolves.com or http://www.myspace.com/skinnywolves
