INTERNATIONAL WEEKENDER AT THE VILLAGE
Amnesty International, the largest, independent human rights organisation in the world, is taking over The Village on Dublin’s Wexford Street from Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th December for a weekender entitled UP IN ARMS.
Acts confirmed so far include Jerry Fish & the Mudbug Club, Mark Geary, Dave Couse & the Impossible, The Blizzards, Julie Feeney, Alphastates, The Chapters, Mainline and The Urges. There will also be DJ sets from Donal Dineen, Paddy Casey, Arveene (Clampdown), Bronagh Gallagher and Johnny Moy. Others are being added to the bill all the time so keep checking back for updates!
These gigs are part of Amnesty’s push to control the Arms Trade. Amnesty International is calling for a global Arms Trade Treaty and for local action to protect civilians from armed violence. More than half a million people are killed every year by conventional weapons. The worldwide arms trade is fuelling conflict, poverty, and human rights abuses. It doesn’t have to be like this. Momentum is now gathering, pushing for a global, legally binding Arms Trade Treaty to bring the trade in weapons under control.
There are around 639 million small arms and light weapons in the world today. Without strict control, such weapons will continue to fuel violent conflict, state repression, crime and domestic abuse. Unless governments act to stop the spread of arms, more lives will be lost, more human rights violations will take place, and more people will be denied the chance to escape poverty.
