In 1986, the Sound Training Centre was established to meet the needs of Ireland's developing music industry and to provide this industry with highly trained personnel in the areas of Sound Engineering, Live Sound & Stage Production and Music Production. The Sound Training Centre courses and examinations have effectively set standards for the training within the industry.

The syllabus has been developed in conjunction with employers and is regularly updated to reflect technological advances and variations in employers’ requirements. In addition to technical training, and introduction to the structure of the industry is provided as part of each course.
