'CARL BARAT is to release a compilation of his favourite tracks for the latest ’UNDER THE INFUENCE’ collection. Drawing on bands from The Clash, The Mamas And The Papas, Supergrass to The Streets, the former Libertine will put out the collection on June 27. Speaking about the album in the sleevenotes, Barat said: “Growing up at the time and in the way I did, there can be no continuity or order in the music that fed me… So, in summary, make mine a pint and I’ll see you by the pool with a book of poetry and an acoustic.” The singer follows in the footsteps of past ’Under The Influence’ curators such as Morrissey, Ian Brown and Paul Weller. Carl Barat’s ’Under The Influence’ tracklisting is: The Mamas And The Papas – ‘Dream A Little Dream’ David Bowie – ‘Oh You Pretty Things’ Bob Dylan – ‘Hurricane’ The Small Faces – ‘The Universal’ The La’s – ‘Son Of A Gun’ Supergrass – ‘Sitting Up Straight’ New York Dolls – ‘Personality Crisis’ The Clash – ‘Remote Control’ The Jam – ‘Eton Rifles’ The Stranglers – ‘No More Heroes’ The Specials – ‘Too Much Too Young’ The Smiths – ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’ Moldy Peaches – ‘Who’s Got The Crack’ Pulp – ‘Sorted For E’s And Wizz’ The Streets – ‘Fit But You Know It’ - From NME.com Whatever you think about Doherty and Babyshambles at least they're doin their own thing and recording their own material. I get the distinct feelin Mr. Barat is struggling for inspiration and just wants to cash in.... I mean older/more established artists may have done it as noted in the article but this for his first solo release? Cop out.

dont think its that big a deal really, not a solo release as such is it? the albums are a cool idea, although as you said, would be more interesting for more established musicians.

Everybody seems to be doing it, it kinda started with DJs putting out mix albums in the 90s (which were at least mixed by the DJ), then it kind of gradually moved into just being compilations put together by a single DJ/artist/band with compilations like the "LateNightTales" and "Back to Mine" series. Now everybody is doing it, Snow Patrol released one recently, Gary Lightbody has a thing for electro-house, who'd a thunk it? To answer the original question, compilations are only a cop-out if they don't offer value for money. All compilations have some kind of a gimmick (in this case, the compiler), so if you like the tracks its alright. This kind of compilation seems a bit twee and dated in an era of iTunes single track downloads and the multitude free Mp3 DJ mix sets to be found online.

what a load of b****x. That just seems really arrogant. "Listen To Music I Like". It's almost as bad as Jamie Oliver's compilation 'Music To Cook By'. ughghhg. Horrid. And there's a big f**kin difference between actual mix albums by DJs, like mix tapes by rappers, and some indie boy shoving out a CD of tunes that he think will make him look cool.

Theres a big difference between a really good DJ mix and an indiekid "cool by association" compilation, but really good commercially available DJ mixes aren't all that common. As someone who likes my dance music, I can say theres a lot of dross out there, like the Euphoria series and stuff which are pretty afwul and as contrived and marketing driven as any compilation out there. Currently I'm listening to MP3 DJ mix by a bootleg DJ named Briscoe called "Blood on the Dancefloor" and its pretty class, I have tons of these on my hard drive that I gotta get round to listening to, some are OK, some are absolutely unbelievable.

As a fairly regular maker of/reciever of other peoples mix CD I do have to say that that a good mix is a wonderful thing (thats sounds very "high fidelity" I know) but to put one out commercially sounds a bit naff.

true it may be pretentious, but if its a list of formative influences for a major artist it could be really useful. I mean how many artists have you discovered, because some band mentioned them? For example i found out about Robert Johnson through Led Zeppelin, Woody Guthrie through Dylan etc (cant think of anymore right now!) oh actually heard about Love through the Coral, That said it doesnt need to come out on a cd, it could just be in an interview or whatever, but still its definitely not ALL bad.

Yea pretty much agree with like ALL of that. In relation to dance music etc take for example Soulwax or well 2manydjs... what they do is fundamentally compiling music but the genre they use it in is, for the most part, completely different to the original. Carl Barat...to me anyway... seems pretty miffed by the success (whether you thinks its founded or not) of his former band mate and cant come up with anything so wants has decided to mask doing f**king covers as a 'compilation record'. Crap Crap Crap. If David Bowie were to grab a few new bands and do his twist on.. I dunno, something by Interpol thats completly different. His talent and success is established. Carl however is supposed to be forging a solo career... not the best way man. AT ALL.
