The Mercury Prize Shortlist is to be released this morning, anyone care to take a guess as to the albums that will make it?
I have a feeling that at least 5 of the following will be on there (note, they are not necessarily my favourites)
Bat for Lashes - Two Suns
The Horrors - Primary Colours
La Roux - La Roux
Florence & The Machine - Lungs
Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plague Lovers
Glasvegas - Glasvegas
Doves - Kingdom of Rust
Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires
The only Irish entry I can see getting in there is Fight Like Apes.
Anyone think of any other albums?

- Delighted for Lisa Hannigan also
- The usual mixed bag, poor enough mixed bag though.
- Bat For Lashes , just don't get it
- Or The Horrors, they seem to be the 'in' band to like
- Florence and the Machine, must have some PR machine behind her
- Kasabian's has its standard few big hitters
- Led Bib; my listening apparatus was not built for any form of jazz unfortunately
- No Doves, thats a shocker

Only everyone will disagree with me, but I reckon La Roux absolutely deserves to win it. It's the only album there that I've listened to repeatedly. It's unashamed, but quite sincere pop.

Havnt heard La Roux, apart from seeing an acoustic performance for BBC at Glasto. Im definately sick of hearing about Florence & The Machine like they/she are the best thing since sliced bread! From what Ive heard of Bat For Lashes I would prefer her sound, but I dont have the album, would people here recommend it? I also like Friendly Fires. They gave a good performance supporting Interpol in the RDS last year I think

Bat for Lashes are okay, not brilliant, just okay.
The Horrors bore me just as much.
La Roux again isn't a preference of mine.
I loooove Florence & the Machine's album, I think it's excellent!
The Glasvegas album did nothing for me, there were a few underwhelming tracks but that's about it.

Funny, if I had to choose, I'd go for Bat for Lashes over Flo & the Machine everytime. I have had it in the car for the past month and still haven't gotten sick of it.

Well, tonight's the night. Florence and the Machine seem unbackable favourites if you go by press/web buzz and starting prices down the bookies. (I still don't get the fuss over her, though.) Speech Debelle might be good value for a punt: it's nice if a little bland at times. The G'wan Oirland shamrock-shaker in me would like Lisa Hannigan to win - but justice would be done if either La Roux or Friendly Fires won it: I love both of them.
(But I fear one of Florence or Glasvegas or Kasabian will win.) |

and what a curve ball. Aidan, thats just freaky sir...I think one has a gift. was it deserving? not a clue. No nothing about the artist or indeed the rap scene. But will have a listen for sure. The BBC has a v good chance to highlight and promote a great array of music from the 12 nominees, but in their infinite wisdom, schedule a half hour for the entire show...truly mind blowing. |
