CLUAS Writers: profile of Eoghan O'Neill
Musically-speaking, this life thing got off to a good start for Eoghan with him
growing up in a 1970s Dublin home where the music of
Johnny Cash,
The Rolling Stones, Kris Kristofferson,
Carly Simon and others were in constant rotation.
But when the pre-teen years rolled around - dear, dear - it really started to fall
apart at the seams (first album bought? Elton John's "Too Low for Zero; First concert?
Frankie Goes to Hollywood in the RDS Simmonscourt). The teenage years, arguably,
saw a incremental improvement in affairs as a life-long, er, infatuation with up
and coming local band U2 took root.
However ten or so years later some precocious notions about dabbling in music journalism
came to the fore. Needless to say, his initial attempts were flatly rejected by
all publications to whom they were submitted. He soon realised the only way he was
ever going to get his, er, insights published was to publish them himself. And therein
this new internet thing came in handy as it allowed him - in March 1999 - to set
up a vanity website (eoghan.com, now no longer in existence) upon which his articles
were unleashed on the unfortunate and unsuspecting public.
Soon however a number of friends chose to submit articles they had written for addition
to the eoghan.com website. This led in May 1999 to Eoghan deciding to change the
name of his vanity publication platform to www.CLUAS.com. Other writers continued
to be attracted to the website and to offer it their writings and reflections on
music. And it is they who - to this day - keep the increasingly
large CLUAS ship somehow afloat.
Eoghan also writes 'Promenade' blog on CLUAS (debut blog entry: Muse.ie: your Auntie's favourite site?)
Joined CLUAS: May 1999 (as, er, the founding member)
Most memorable thread on the CLUAS discussion board...
'A rejected gig review submission' (from February 2005). Chosen because it features the full text of - without doubt - the all-time greatest submission received by CLUAS.
