anybody pop along to whelans last night? i can honestly say it was without doubt the most fun i've had at any gig. ever. 17 band members, a tonne of ticker tape/confetti, a chorus of madonna's 'like a prayer', kazoos and ukuleles for the audience, sweet swedish pop melodies, an impromptu performance of teenage kicks outside the loos upstairs post gig and unbridled joy in every heart....life-affirming, good for the soul and for the feet...heroic!

Hurrah! Sometimes I find their CULTLIKE INTENSITY a bit much, but they're a great sweep-you-away-in-their-frenzy kind of band. I Have A Built A Treehouse is a great paean to impossibly simple, beautiful writing, isn't it?

I was a proud kazooist! I didn't catch Teenage Kicks afterwards but I heard them practising it beforehand.
What a show though.. Seriously amazing. In the past week, I've been able to add the Spinto Band and IFB to my list of bands that can emulate The Polyphonic Spree live experience! I think the Flaming Lips are the only other members of this club. And they're on Saturday.. phew!

Damn, I hope I didn't ruin the "impromptu" bit of Teenage Kicks.

I'm from Barcelona remind me very much of that previously successful cult-like band, The Polyphonic Spree. Lots of band members, gigs almost religious in their fervour.... I suspect they will go the same way too. Moderately successful debut, a few hot ticket gigs, drab second album, bye bye.
I've listened to the album - it really is rather tiresome to struggle all the way through it.

The 3rd album (soundtrack to Thumbsucker movie) was genius, and... As for "bye bye", you are quite clearly uneducated as to the current affairs of the Spree! Wait 'til March!

Not a problem!
I think that the Spree fell off my radar after the first album - that was the basis of my post. I found the second album to be more of the same... The third must have had poor sales as I've never even heard of its existence.
But you sound like to know more than me about the Spree! I hope the new album lives up to your expectations.

yeah 'let me introduce my friends' isn't the most dynamic of albums and so i wasn't really expecting very much from the gig but every second of it was sheer, unadulterated fun!
i suppose the recommendation is - take or leave the album, but not to be missed live!

Stephen, the Thumbsucker movie was a limited release and the soundtrack was just 20 or so little mood pieces, so you're forgiven!
myspace.com/polyphonicspree for their new look, 2 new songs and 2 covers (including Lithium!).

Just got to listen to the I'm From Barcelona album and I loved it - I'm on a bit of a Swede-pop kick at the moment, what with IFB, Peter Bjorn and John (saw them live last week - deadly!!!), Herman Dune (charming folk-pop) around these days. Ever since ABBA, always loads of brilliant Swedish music - what's going on up there? 'French Letter' may have to become 'Swedish Message/Massage' (or something - still working on the puerile title)!
Anyway, hopefully IFB won't fade out/wear off like the Polyphonic Spree (vb7000, you're really building up hopes there!!! You're not wearing a white robe, by any chance?)
