Did you watch it? What did you think? Thought Rufus didn't pick great songs to open with, definitely didn't impress my housemates who'd never heard him before. April's Fool from 1998? He's so good live but that didn't come across in the first songs. Improved as the show went on. Thought Martha was great, her gig was really good earlier this year. Loved the song they performed together. Poor Julie Feeney was really nervous, really like her album but didn't think the songs sounded great last night. Will be interesting to see what she's like on Tuesday. Not sure the interview with Rufus provided much insightful information either.

Not a Rufus fan really but liked the one about Jeff Buckley - 'Memphis Skyline' I think it was. It's wierd watching Julie Feeney play live, the same vibe doesn't come across that is evident on her album. Still good though. But Matt Lunson was pretty poor.

I thought the Lunson song about Jesus and the bible was good. Had to turn off his interview though. Can't listen to Aussie/Taz accents after watching Wolf Creek on DVD. Too scared :(

i'd agree about the interviews - nothing new in any of them, which is a surprise because john kelly usually (or seems to) know his stuff. didnt think much of either wainwright, i have to say. Matt lunson sounded like mundy. and i liked julie feeney's accordian.

Some of the interviews are excrutiating. Did anyone see Liam O'Maonlai interviewed on the side of a cliff? The one where he grabbed Kelly's arm in a vice-like grip and started catterwauling some olde Irish dirge, all eyes closed in earnestness, into Kelly's earhole? Did you see Kelly squirm? Did you see him not knowing where to look? Televisual gold!! They rightly ripped the piss out of it subsequently on Blizzard of Odd....

Yeah, Kelly had to laugh at one point, I think O'Maonlai was smiling a bit cos he knew Kelly was awkward but he kept going anyway. That's some coat John Kelly's got, eh? Dont like Rufus' voice on last night's perf anyway. A bit droney.

I hope Julie Feeney's album is better than her performance on the telly as I thought it was pretty shocking. Apparently Rufus wasn't in great form on the night (unlike say, Arsenal were this past Tuesday) and had to restart a couple of the songs.
I liked him but not as much as when I saw him live in May.
Martha was completely engaging, much better then her gig at The Village.
Didn't really care for Matt Lunson either, so forgettable infact that when the show was over I thought only 3 people had been on it.

True story, Liam and The Flowers were once rehearsing in blackrock, during their glory days. It was summer, a fine sunny day, they were outside in someone's back garden, Liam decided to take his shoes off and feel the vibes of mother earth through the bare soles of his feet, anyway mother earth must have been vibing out that day, because liam became so immersed with the energy of the earth and the universe that, mid song, he dropped the mike and made a run for it out the side gate and down the street at full tilt, he made it all the way to Ranelagh before the lads caught up with him and when they did, he said he had been overcome by the power and magic of the energy of the earth...it isnt an act, he really is that hippy dippy. |

We'll agree to disagree. Really didn't think she was that bad. Have checked out her site and myspace area - the songs are genius. Listen to Fictitious Richard for instance. |

I tuned in to other voices last night mainly to see Julie Feeney.
After all the hype with the choice music awards I was expecting a treat. But I think she really let herself down.
Maybe thats just her style? but she looked at times like a rabbit caught in the headlights. She genuinely looked scared. Is it just me or was she playing bum notes on the accordian? Her command of instruments seemed very basic and hesitant.
I reckon she can say goodbye to the choice award after that performance
Am I wrong? Was it just a bad night?

Hopefully wrong. I think she has two degrees in music so I suppose it is bad for her if people think she only has a basic handle on instruments! |

Didn't see it but i'd have to guess that she was having a bad night. Apparently she's a highly trained classical musician. Studied in the Netherlands or Belgium or some such place. I'd be prepared to give her another chance and not judge her on one performance even though it's hard to shake off a first impression.

i'd say most of the Choice Award judges couldnt give two figs about her performance on some TV show - they're going on the albums. i reckon she's a shoe-in for it. |
