....inspired by archie's post about lame 2nd albums, I've been thinking about 2nd albums that are not only good but absolutely classic - for starters
massive attack 'protection'
suede 'dog man star'
katell keineg 'jet'
....and surely lots more....right?

Bona Fide Classics:
Joy Division - Closer
New Order - Power Corruption and Lies (Well, the first was understandably a slightly shaky start)
The Breeders - Last Splash
Orbital - Orbital 2 (The Brown Album)
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Great 2nd albums that live in the shadow of the first
Television - Adventure
Saint Etienne - So Tough
Roxy Music - For your Pleasure
The Chemical Brothers - Dig your own hole (heavier and more exciting than the first, though not quite as good)
Second albums that aren't universally recognised as classics, but I reckon are fantastic anyway
Adult. - Anxiety Always
Lali Puna - Scary World Theory
Schneider TM - Zoomer (second solo album)
Luscious Jackson - Fever in, Fever Out
Ladytron - Light & Magic

oooh i dont agree with ya there indiecater - I 100% think that 'The Decline of British Sea Power' whoops Open Season in spectacular style!! I mean I really like it but not nearly as much as 'The Decline of..' Not tryin to start a rift or nowt - personal opinion n all - but just wondering why you think Open Seaon is better?

off the top of me head:
...the wedding present - bizarro
...palace brothers - days in the wake
...slint - spiderland
...joy division - closer
...nirvana - nevermind
...pixies - surfer rosa (or doolittle if you call 'come on pilgrim' an ep)
...waiting room - catering for headphones
...leftfield - leftism
...could say going blank again by ride but i prefer 'nowhere'
...disagree strongly with ryan adams' gold (as mentioned above) - heartbreaker's the one for me

Defo! Never understood why Unknown Pleasures was touted as their best ever album. This was the reason I got into them and always remained my firm favorite.

I was under the impression that "Leftism" was their first album proper and "Rhythm and Stealth" was the second? "Rhythm and Stealth" is a class album, but not quite as good as "Leftism"

Cool, thats what I was kind of wondering. I absolutely love the two "proper" (whatever that means) Leftfield albums but didn't realise that they had any releases before that besides singles/promos so was just trying to find out if you knew anything about stuff before that! Will be looking out on amazon/play for a copy of that now.
I've got "Original" as a cassette single somewhere.. :D
