As some of the elder lemons here might be aware, The Smiths released their first single 20 years ago and BBC 6music have some interesting stuff on their site http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/artists/smiths.shtml Best of this is 2 30 minute pieces (rela Audio) with some old interviews interspersed with Peel Session & demos. There are also some pretty piss poor covers by the like of The Thrills and Ed Harcourt (actually I can't think of a good Smiths cover ever).
Hilariously, Mozzer heaps praise on Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce as the finest musicians in Manchester....how things changed.

only good example of a good Smiths cover I can think of is when Jeff Buckley interspurses Hallelujah with "mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head..."

The Thrills couvered "Last night I dreamt somebody loved me". I suppose the real problem with Smiths covers is that they almost always stick religiously to the original which is a mistake given that the originals are so unique. I have collected quite a few over the years, Dream Acedemy, 10000 maniacs, Kirsty McColl, even spanish version of Reel around the fountain. The best I've heard is the Deftones version of "Please please please.." purely because their noise level is so different to what is a fragile song.
I must give an honourable mention to a very rough demo I have of the Afghan Whigs doing "How Soon is know". Shame they never recorded it (along with all those Stevie Wonder & Curtis Mayfield covers they used to do live)

a lot of people really like schneiderTM's (electronic) version of 'there is a light..' but i can't really comment on it as i only heard it once...i can't think of a good smiths cover either...

I actually don't mind the tatu cover so much. Given that they are a manufactured pop group, it's not such a bad job but that'd be Trevor Horn's production. It's pretty much a straight cover of the original with some slightly edgier guitar and wailing vocals. I have also read that Mozzer & Marr would be good to the tune of quarter of a million each if it did similar business to Tatu's last hit.

Mates of ours played at a tribute night for a friend of ours that died last year, they called themselves The Artane Allstars and got up and did a few covers they thought would be appropriate - one of which was 'there is a light...' it was really beautiful and they did it so well - very emotional

Low covered last night ... and rather brilliant it was too (not as good as the original, but then that would be quite difficult). i'd love to hear that afghan whigs version of how soon is now too. sounds very interesting

The SchneiderTM cover is beautiful. It's on one of Rough Trade's electronica compilations. Lots of good stuff on that.
