Anybody know if Whipping Boy's first album is available in any shops? There's a copy on eBay at the moment but this'll no doubt rise in price beyond what's affordable!!

You have your work cut out there. Haven't seen sight nor sould of a copy in years and I do trawl the Dublin second hand stores regularly. Not even sure if submarine ever had a CD release at all (I've been trying to get a replacement for my vinyl).
I reckon eBay is your best shot for that and probably Heartworm too (but I have seen that in Freebird very occasionally).
Tis still a mystery to me how they were not huge - one of the best live acts of their day. I particularly remember some great nights in the Arts Centre in Temple Bar, it was bring your own grog so many was the can of LCL and other such cheap and nasty treats I enjoyed to their sonic assault

agreed. one of the best irish bands that have ever (dis)banded. i have a copy of submarine on CD and it's really good. it's a lot noisier, more american /sonic youthy sounding than their other stuff though. i got it about 5 years ago for free. a friend of mine who didn't like the band was given it by the drummers nephew(or cousin or something) and he knew i was a fan and passed it on to me.
i dont think it's available any more, but the copy i have is an official cd release so at least we know it got one. i dont know how limited it was. i heard one of the tracks on phantom , so maybe they have a copy and can help.
if you are not averse to being in dublin and not weirded out by the thought ,i could burn a copy for you and pass it on.

can i be cheeky and ask for a copy too???...sounds great...heartworm is an astonishing album...i remember it was released around the same time as the bends by radiohead and i always said it was a better record (and i would still say that)...didn't like the eponymous album though...

Fan as I am, now way is it worth circa 50 euro. As a matter of fact, there are very few albums I would pay that sort of bread for.
In these cases, surely it is worth any record comapnies while to print up a couple of thousand copies of out of print albums and sell them over the internet at a premium price ( when I say premium, I mean maybe 30 euro). At least that way the artist gets some of the money.

With seven hours to go on ebay the highest bid for Submarine is now 50 quid sterling. And I kid you not.

If neither of you can meet up with joedolan then reply here and I'll see if I can wrangle a copy out of my friend. I have a copy myself as it's pretty hard to come buy without paying an arm and a leg on some auction.
There were tentative discussions on the Whipping Boy e-groups a while ago about a box set being released, including all three albums and a host of rareties. Unfortunately there's been no update since then but *fingers crossed*. If anyone has a copy of their Sweet Mangled Thing EP could they please let me know as not even Paul Page, guitarist with the band, has a copy anymore.

I have the Submarine vinyl and the Whipping Boy EP & I Think I Miss You 12"s
Don't have Sweet Mangled Thing - if I remember right that was a cassette-only release.?
As far as I am aware Submarine was not limited. It came out on Liquid records in May 1992.
They were a great live band - The Underground and the Rock Garden were two places I saw them play many times.
Does Heartworm exist on black vinyl? Mine is blue and so is anybody elses that I know.

Submarine did come out on Liquid records. But that company subsequently folded so there were only a limited number of copies pressed.
I don't know about the maths involved in reprinting a few thousand cds but if a record company could make money for nothing I'm sure they'd already be doing it.
As for Sweet Mangled Thing, I don't have many details to hand about the release but if you come across it please let me know.
Saw Whipping Boy live in Virgin Megastore and they were great. Fergal had a staring match with everyone in the front row including me. Top band.

Picked up a copy of Heartworm 2nd hand for 4 quid in Concerto Records Amsterdam. If anyone is going there it has a huge second hand selection and top top new prices (examples - Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 11 euro, Reindeer Selection Son of a... 9 euro, Flaming Lips Soft Bulleting 8 euro). Well worth a visit if you are there
