Cluas Gigs of the Fortnight

The best gigs across Ireland during the period 3-16 July 2006

Gig of the fortnight is........  Oxegen

Where and When?
Punchestown Racecourse, Kildare - 8th & 9th July

Why? After a couple of lacklustre years and the general degree of love people seem to have for The Electric Picnic, things weren't looking great for Ireland's largest festival. But all credit to MCD (not something that is said often round these parts) they've pulled out all the stops for this year's festival with one of the biggest bands of all time playing in the Who, obligatory 'it' band in The Artic Monkeys and a few really interesting acts lined up in The Animal Collective and !!!.

At this stage the government should probably either extend citizenship to the members of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers or ban them for these shores forever. Do they ever leave?

Best of the Rest

Who?
The Eels

Where and When?
TBMC, Dublin - 7th July

Mark Everett has made a career of making being gloomy sound really quite pretty and appealing. Over the last 9 years he has released 6 albums worth of high quality alt-pop, including last year's 'Blinking Lights and Other Revelations' which he visits Ireland in support of this month.

Who?
!!!

Where and When?
TBMC, Dublin - 8th July

Let's get the obvious question out of the way first. It's usually pronounced 'Chk Chk Chk' although 'Pow Pow Pow', 'Uh Uh Uh' and 'Etc Etc Etc' are common varients. The name was inspired by the subtitles from the film The Gods Must Be Crazy , where three clicking sounds of the mouth were represented as !!!.

Formed in 1996 after the demise of hardcore band Yah Mos !!! were formed with the intention of making more danceable music and have two albums to their name.

Who?
Roxy Music

Where and When?
Vicar Street, Dublin - 5th July
The Marquee, Cork - 6th July

There is just too much great music to have a handle on every significant band there's ever been, and there is a (possibly) giant Roxy Music shaped hole in my record collection. I couldn't name a single one of their songs but I do know that Brian Eno did something with Airports. I also remember Brian Ferry with a ridiculous moustache looking seedy and singing "Let's Come Together", that's probably best forgotten though.

Anyway, if you're a fan you're probably very happy that they're playing here.

Who?
Julie Feeney

Where and When?
Sugar Club, Dublin - 6th July

Julie Feeney's '13 songs', had the choice award it won spurred it on to commercial success, could have really sparked a lot of debate amongst the Irish record buying public. The two main factions, consisting of the 'It's a load of crap' brigade and the 'It's really good, give it another listen' crowd could caused the biggest split the nation has seen since the treaty. Meanwhile the small group of 'Ah I don't really care one way or the other' folk would have just wanted everyone to get along.

Alas it was not to be, yours truly was spoiling for a fight. "13 songs" is by no means an instantly accessible record but it is a unique sounding album that it worth investigating.

Also this fortnight:
Robert Plant
The Marquee, Cork - 5th July
Kanye West
The Marquee, Cork - 3rd July
Gemma Hayes
The Village, Dublin - 6th July
The Guggenheim Grotto
Crawdaddy, Dublin - 15th July
